How can logistics transport improve delivery efficiency?

Most delivery inefficiency doesn't live in the cab of a truck. It lives in the thirty minutes a driver spends at a dock waiting for someone to confirm a load that was already packed two hours ago, or in the pallet that gets pulled and re-staged because the pick list and the manifest disagreed with each other. The truck is fine. The handoffs are broken.
Route optimization software gets a lot of attention, and sure, shaving miles matters. But in most mid-size operations I've seen, the bigger gains come from tightening what happens before the truck moves. Cut dock dwell time by fifteen minutes per stop and you've just given your fleet a meaningful chunk of capacity back without buying a single new vehicle.
A few things that actually move the needle, in no particular order of importance:
- Accurate outbound inventory confirmation before the trailer is sealed, not after the driver has already staged
- Departure windows that account for real dock availability, not theoretical load times
- A single source of truth for what's on each load, shared with the receiver before arrival
That last one sounds obvious until you've watched a receiving team at a regional grocery DC reject a pallet at 7am because their system showed a different case count than the BOL. That's a two-hour problem that started twelve hours earlier with a count nobody verified.
The carriers aren't the ones losing you time. The gaps between your WMS, your counting process, and your load confirmation workflow are. Fix the data before it gets on the truck and the truck takes care of itself.
