Faster Fulfillment Starts With Inventory Accuracy

Most fulfillment teams that are missing delivery windows are not losing time at the dock or in transit. They're losing it earlier, quietly, in the gap between what the system says is on the shelf and what's actually there. A picker goes to a slot for a unit that doesn't exist. Someone has to go find it, or sub it, or cancel the line. That's the delay. And it already happened before the order even started moving.


Inventory accuracy is the unglamorous thing nobody wants to talk about because it's not flashy. Cycle counting isn't a headline. But a DC running 98.5% location accuracy versus one running 94% is not a close comparison in real operational terms. At scale, that 4.5-point gap turns into missed cuts, late shipments, and customer chargebacks that your team is spending Friday afternoons explaining.


The fixes aren't complicated, but they require consistency. Count high-velocity locations more often, not just once a quarter during the big wall-to-wall. If a slot is getting touched fifty times a day, count it weekly. Investigate the discrepancies that look small — a quantity of two when it should be three is not a rounding error, it's a signal. And make sure whoever's doing the counting actually has a tool that lets them flag and resolve exceptions in the moment, not on a clipboard that gets handed off to someone in an office two days later.
