What AI actually does better in logistics (and what it doesn't)

Humans are excellent at spotting that something is wrong. We notice the pallet that looks off, the slot that feels light, the shipment that arrived quieter than it should have. That instinct is real and it matters. What humans are not good at is processing 40,000 SKU movements across three shifts and catching the one item that's been miscounted eleven times in a row because it has two nearly identical barcodes and the pick label is slightly warped. That's not a judgment call. That's a volume problem, and volume is exactly where AI earns its keep.
What AI-powered systems actually do better comes down to a few things. Pattern recognition at scale — finding that a specific product consistently goes missing on Tuesday afternoons when a particular carrier picks up. Cycle count prioritization that's based on actual risk and movement velocity, not just alphabetical order or gut feel. And flagging discrepancies before they compound, not after the quarterly audit reveals you've been carrying phantom inventory for six weeks.
They don't do better at judgment calls. They don't know that your receiving team is short-staffed today and a 3% count variance is actually fine given the circumstances. A good ops lead knows that. The AI doesn't.
The systems that work best aren't the ones trying to replace that ops lead — they're the ones that give her something useful to look at when she walks in at 6am instead of a spreadsheet she has to interpret from scratch.
